Delsym and Mucinex DM are the main cough suppressants available over-the-counter. Delsym (dextromethorphan) is best for a DRY persistent cough. Mucinex DM (guaifenesin and dextromethorphan) is best for a WET or phlegmy cough. When taking mucinex DM or mucinex anything, it is very important to drink plenty of fluids because mucinex (guaifenesin) is believed to work by increasing the volume of secretions thereby reducing the viscosity of thick secretions that may be present in the trachea and bronchi with upper respiratory infections.
