Allegra is the ONLY oral anti-histamine that is non-sedating even at higher doses and is the only oral anti-histamine approved for airplane pilots to take. Claritin is sedating at higher doses, but is considered less potent than Allegra and Zyrtec. Zyrtec and Xyzal may be sedating, even at normal dosages (10% report sedation). However, they have rapid onset of action within 1 hour instead of 3 hours with Allegra and Claritin. Benadryl has onset of action within 15-30 minutes with peak effects within 1-4 hours, but is sedating.Nasal Sprays
The differences among steroid nasal sprays are actually quite minimal limited to taste, nasal lining irritation, and smell. Nasacort and Rhinocort are considered to have minimal taste and smell. Flonase has a flowery scent and is typically the cheapest among all steroid nasal sprays. Steroid nasal sprays should be used daily for at least 2-3 weeks to achieve greatest benefit. Nasal Crom is a mast cell stabilizer (not a steroid) and works best when used 30 minutes before becoming exposed to an allergic environment.
