What to Expect at an Appointment

Your first appointment will generally be with Dr. Chang at Fauquier ENT Consultants. At this first appointment, he will obtain a complete history of what you think is wrong with your voice and the factors that may have led to your poor vocal/speech quality. He will than perform a complete physical examination that will include fiberoptic laryngoscopy in order to evaluate your entire anatomy from a physical and functional standpoint from the tip of your nose to your voicebox. At that point, a decision will be made to whether to perform stroboscopy which is a specialized exam to completely asses your vocal cords which is the vibratory organ that creates the voice. At times, he may decide to perform a fiberoptic bronchcoscopy to evaluate the anatomy below the vocal cords.

Once diagnosis of the poor vocal/speech quality is made by Dr. Chang, treatment will begin whether it be speech/voice rehabilitation, medications, or surgery. At this point, other members of the Virginia Voice & Speech Center may become involved in your care.
